Arik — Eleven

Having grown up in a coven had its advantages when it came to strange things happening. When the power went out, that wasn’t necessarily unusual. When you pair that with complete silence outside as well, I knew something wasn’t quite right so I ran upstairs and called Papa. I knew I could always count on him to come when I needed his help. And my mate’s den definitely needed his help.

After feeding my papa’s hungry coven members, I went back upstairs with my mate to try getting a little more sleep, but War had other plans. He wanted to talk. At four in the morning. If I was going to be up at four in the morning, I sure as hell didn’t want to talk. I wanted to fuck. But, when I felt his distress through our bond, I knew that he needed to talk, and that’s what mates did. They were there for each other, no matter what.

So, I curled up in War’s strong arms and we talked. We talked for hours about what was going on and what was worrying him.

“What’s going on in that head of yours, alpha?”

“So many things, kitten. I don’t even know where to start.”

“Why don’t you start at the thing that’s troubling you the most right now?”

“Right now the thing troubling me the most is everything that’s going on with the coven. It was something that didn’t necessarily bother me as much as it does now that I’ve met you. My bear doesn’t like the idea of our mate possibly being in danger. Add in the fact that you’re pregnant, and he’s really not happy with everything that those witches are doing. It’s taking everything I have to hold him back and not let him go and just attack. That’s not me. But where you and our cubs are concerned, he’s in full protective alpha bear mode.”

“I think that’s understandable, for any shifter. Especially an alpha with a pregnant mate. I know that Dad is super protective of Papa and all of my brothers as well. I also know that on his own, Papa is incredibly powerful and he’s more than willing to help us deal with what’s going on. Maybe you’ll feel better about the entire situation after you can sit down and have a long conversation with him tomorrow.”

“Perhaps. I have to go to the station for a little while. Promise me you won’t leave the house without someone else with you.”

“You don’t have to worry about that, I have no intentions of leaving the house at all.”

“That’s not what I’m expecting of you. I don’t want you to feel like a prisoner. Honey Creek is your home now, and I just want you to be extra cautious until we figure out what’s going on. That’s all I was asking. I wasn’t asking you to not leave.”

“I know that. I just have a lot to do with the party as well as trying to figure out setting up my medical practice.
